This is a trip down memory lane, but it also shows how stylish some of the promos and opening credits were. There is an art to creating effective and memorable promotional ads. Combine special effects and editing, spectacular images, and driving, catchy music. But you must accomplish this in about a minute. Sound easy?
Here are several terrific promotions and commercials from the 1960s and 1970s that you might remember.
ABC’s Movie of the Week. The theme was adapted from a song by Burt Bacharach. The images were photographed using images on glass. Innovation is the product of experimentation and luck.
ABC’s Wide World of Sports. The theme was written by Charles Fox, who penned the themes for numerous commercials, television shows, films and even popular music.

The Friday Night TV lineup on ABC in 1970. The Brady Bunch, Nanny and the Professor, The Partridge Family, That Girl, Love, American Style. The times were changing.

The NBC Mystery Movie anthology: McMillan & Wife, Columbo, Hec Ramsey and McCloud. Remember the guy with the flashlight against the evening sky, with the Henry Mancini theme?
The 1970 promo for ABC’s Monday Night Football. A regular weeknight game was something new. The NFL and AFL had formally merged into one league. This show delineated between the old and the new. MNF had a high production value. The promo had cool graphics and a slick production, and another theme written by Charles Fox.
