Here are some terrific bands from the past, my favorite five songs. I don’t usually do short lists, but it’s an easy way to reference more bands and artists. Sometimes it’s tough to narrow a song catalogue to just five, other times finding a fourth or fifth is a struggle.

  1. Many great picks on here, Mike, based on what I recognize to too many to comment on each. And, yes, it must be hard to limit picks to just five songs, especially if you know the corresponding bands and artists very well.

For Dire Straits, I might have picked “Telegraph Road” instead of “Money For Nothing.” Yes, the latter is kind of an iconic song, but I guess I’ve just heard it too many times.

For the Monkees, “Daydream Believer” would be among my top 5.

For Linda Ronstadt, I would have included “Blue Bayou.”

When it comes to ZZ Top, I tend to favor their earlier music. Two of my all-time favorites are “Brown Sugar” and “Waiting For the Bus.” But you have what I consider perhaps as the ultimate blues rocker: “Tush” – so tight and just a super cool guitar riff!

For Carole King, I could easily come up with a top 5 from just the “Tapestry” album, so picking five overall feels like mission impossible! 🙂

I guess my list would be “I Feel the Earth Move”, “It’s Too Late”, “Up On the Roof”, “Sweet Seasons” and “Jazzman.” That said, this list could look different tomorrow!

    1. You mentioned some great songs, I agree with each one. I picked five because I wanted to see what others picked. It’s tough.

Agree, all five could have come from Tapestry.

Some of Dire Straits best songs weren’t singles or the ones with the most radio play. Some complex songwriting and arranging there.
