The Alaska cruise is now in the history books, or at least our honeymoon book. I’m sure this won’t be our last cruise or vacation out of the country. This was a big trip for us, and my first international trip.

I have been reflecting on our trip and travel in general. Here’s the good / troublesome aspects of international travel.

First the good:

  • Seeing the world
  • Tuning out the news
  • Experiencing different foods (my wife enjoys not cooking)
  • Being pampered by cruise ship, hotels, etc.
  • Meeting people from other parts of the world
  • A greater appreciation for other cultures, history and experiences
  • Checking things off the bucket list
  • Ideas for future travel

The troublesome:

  • Being away from home for a long time
  • Temptation to eat too much
  • Over pack or under pack
  • Forgetting something
  • Thinking about things at home
  • Missing pets
  • Travel fatigue
  • Bad weather on site seeing days
  • Long lines and security procedures
  • Hate flying
  • Internet connectivity issues

Thankfully, my travel partner is very experienced at travel organizing trips and solving problems on the fly. Thank goodness one of us has the skill and patience to handle travel issues. If the line at the buffet is very long, I want to call the State Department and have a special envoy dispatched.

It’s funny, on this trip we traveled by plane, ship, boat, car, bus and train, and survived it all. Next time we might incorporate a gondola, rope bridge, zip line and hot air balloon. You only live once.

  1. I love travel despite the headaches. But I swore off cruise ships, even tho I like being pampered. Big reason: environmental impact, followed closely by hedonism level. Glad you and your wife enjoyed the honeymoon, though!

    1. Thanks. This was my first cruise. I held out a long time before taking one. I was only moderately hedonistic. It was a challenge.

      1. I’ve done four. On the last (Caribbean Princess) the ship got slammed with a world-record fine for dumping their waste in the ocean, then trying to cover it up. We got the news the first day of our cruise. (Not from the ship, of course.) The hedonism that turns me off stems primarily from my shipmates’ behavior, and the excessive pampering by service employees (although I can’t claim not being complicit).

But I’m an idealistic curmudgeon, so apologies for being a negative Nellie!

      2. Cruise ships are notoriously dirty. They know better than to violate regulations.
