Mixes

Yes, I’m a big fan of The Cure. Songs of a Lost World (2024) was a welcome addition to their catalogue. My review from earlier this year. It was the first new Cure album in 16 years. I was pleased to learn that the album would get a remix release. Mixes of a Lost World (2025) is quite a trip.

Songs of a Lost World

“Just after Christmas I was sent a couple of unsolicited remixes of Songs of a Lost World tracks and I really loved them,” Cure frontman Robert Smith said. “The Cure has a colorful history with all kinds of dance music, and I was curious as to how the whole album would sound entirely reinterpreted by others.”

There are two versions of Mixes. The standard version is a two-disc set. The deluxe version is a three-disc set, with an extra set of remixed songs from the original album. Each remix is by a different person, so the variety of styles and arrangements vary greatly.

Mixes will naturally be of big interest to Cure fans, but it’s intense with very dense instrumentation. If you have the deluxe set, as I do, I wouldn’t recommend trying to ingest the entire three discs at one setting. For your own safety. Our two cats hid under the bed each time I played the remixes. I believe the house now leans to the east side. Thankfully, we have “The Cure” rider in our home insurance policy.

He didn’t heed my advice.

You’ve been warned.

Each song is remixed, and essentially reconstructed, many unrecognizable when compared to the original tracks. Cure songs have been remixed before, but I don’t believe to this degree.

Of the three discs, disc two is my favorite on first listen. Each of the other two discs have highlights, but for a set of remixes, disc two will be my go-to.

One response to “Mixes of a Lost World, The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World (album review)”

  1. I only know The Cure based on songs I heard on the radio in the 80s and 90s back in Germany. I’ve always loved “Friday I’m In Love.” Other songs I recall were more of a mixed bag. It’s certainly impressive that not only are they still around after all this time but also releasing new music.
