Bonus day! Three lists instead of one. All quirky, influential English songwriters who had a lot of success in the 1980s and 1990s with sophisticated pop/rock.
XTC
One of the most misunderstood bands in rock. XTC found great success everywhere but the U.S. They had a very loyal following here, but widespread popularity seemed to elude them. XTC evolved from a high energy post-punk band into a sophisticated and eclectic pop-rock band of quirky ideas and soundscapes. The creatively intelligent lyrics, obtuse humor and musical arrangements were difficult for many to appreciate. As their success grew, they withdrew from the road and only occasionally performed live – that hindered their trajectory. By 2006, the band was down to just Moulding and Partridge and they split. Here’s an odd fact, the group was formed in Swindon, Wiltshire, England where the four lads grew up. All four still live there.

Terry Chambers, Colin Moulding, Dave Gregory and Andy Partridge
“Making Plans for Nigel” Drums & Wires (1979)
“Senses Working Overtime” English Settlement (1982)
“Ball and Chain” English Settlement (1982)
“Dear God” Skylarking (1986)
“King for a Day” Oranges & Lemons (1989)
Paul Weller/The Jam/Style Council
Paul Weller started off with a high energy band called The Jam. They released a few well-received albums before he split up that group to form the Style Council, which had a bigger, jazzier sound incorporating R&B and more sophisticated arrangements. After a few albums, Weller struck out for a solo career, where he’s played nearly every genre of music imaginable. Weller never had the kind of success in the U.S. that he achieved in the UK and Europe. He’s a brilliant songwriter and musical stylist.

“That’s Entertainment” Sound Effects (1981) The Jam
“My Ever Changing Moods” Café Bleu (1984) Style Council
“Shout to the Top” Vision Quest soundtrack (1984)
“Glad Times” Fat Pop (2021) solo album

World Party

World Party was a spinoff of The Waterboys, Karl Wallinger formed the group in 1986. Wallinger was the main writer, lead vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He supplemented the sound with a core of musicians. The band wound down in 2000, as Wallinger continued writing and occasionally performing. He battled health issues, passing away in 2024.

“Way Down Now” Goodbye Jumbo (1990)
