In the cold morning light
When the sunrays smile bright
The remains are plain to see
What you and I will never be
In the fading mist of the day
Taking stock of our headway
Knowing who will leave my side
And which of our hearts will confide
The distance between light and dark
Faint as a decades faded watermark
Blink and the lightning burns an arc
A wafer-thin glow is eaten by the dark
After the darkness creeps away
The dawn arrives but will not stay
Don’t ask me to wake please let me drift
Just be here for tonight’s solitary shift
