Welcome to Monday Morning Quarterback, a chance to look at ourselves and reflect.

Why are we tearing this country apart over who performs at halftime or a private business’ modernization of their logo?

There are so many more important issues to direct our divisiveness and anger.

Ready, set, go…

I was car shopping and I had to rule out red and blue cars. If I buy a red car I offend people. The same with blue. Not fair! So I bought a white car. Who could be offended by the color white?

Hotdogs come in a package of 10. Hotdog buns are usually in a bag of 8. That’s ridiculous, 10 and 8 don’t work together.

Do you face the shower nozzle when showering or face away from it? That’s a very divisive topic. Many people do both, but about an equal number primarily do one or the other.

When I send someone a text message, I expect to get a text in return. I hate it when that person calls to respond. We’re texting, not calling. I shouldn’t have to talk. Use your fingers!

When we go to a restaurant, the first question my wife asks the server is “Are you Coke or Pepsi?” It’s one or the other. My wife has very specific soft drink tastes and I hold my breath waiting for the server’s answer. Please God, let it be Coke.

Here are a few other items that divide us:

Crunchy or smooth

Ginger or Mary Ann

Thin crust or thick

Dogs or cats

Toilet paper roll: over or under

Android or iPhone

Prefer the mountains or the beach

Boxers or briefs

Truck or car

In your vehicle: music or talk radio

Favorite pair of shoes: laces or slip-ons

Eyeglasses: plastic or wire frames

My point is simply that we waste a lot of our time on ridiculous things. We puff ourselves up in outrage over minor disagreements and annoyances – for what? The things that define us also divide us.

The day after the world ends, some spacecraft will land and one traveler will say to the other: “That didn’t take long.”

One response to “Really? These are important issues???”

  1. You didn’t mention it, but I think this is mainly America, not the rest of the world. And I think it’s partly because our country is so wealthy and priveleged – and there’s no war going on to occupy us – we’ve become bored and need to create “little wars.” Just speculating here.
