Woke is the word. A bad word to some, a wonderful word to others. There are actually six, not five, songs, about compassion, togetherness, tolerance and hope. Enjoy or not.

Black and White” Three Dog Night recorded this song in 1972. It was a number one hit for them. Originally written in 1954, the first one to record it was Pete Seeger.

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight
A beautiful sight

Get Together” The Youngbloods in 1969 had a big hit with this song. Written by Chet Powers.

Come on, people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now

Where Have All the Flowers Gone” First penned by Pete Seeger in 1954, the lyrics were expanded by Joe Hickerson in 1960. Recorded by many artists including The Kingston Trio in 1960, and Peter, Paul and Mary in 1962

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Imagine” What’s more woke than this song of hope and compassion? Written and recorded by John Lennon in 1971.

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace, you

I’d Love to Change the World” Ten Years After released this song in 1971.

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me, where is sanity?
Tax the rich, feed the poor
‘Til there are no rich no more

I’d love to change the world
But I don’t know what to do
So I’ll leave it up to you

Aquarius” Originally written for the Musical, Hair, “Aquarius” became a huge hit for the 5th Dimension in 1969.

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation, Aquarius
Aquarius

Fascism, But Can You Dance To It?” Released on an independent label, by Dr. Dream & the Cream Machine.

Fascism, a shiny MAGA object
True believer, societal reject
Favorite passions, Jesus and hate
God forbid, the Nazi finds a mate

Fascism, fascism it's a MAGA dance craze Fascism, fascism a MAGA brain malaise

One response to “Friday Five: Five of my favorite woke songs”

  1. Once again Mike, you knocked it out of the park! An excellent and thoughtful list of Woke tunes that hits the nail on the head! I was especially excited & pleased to see that you included that Bonus track by Dr. Dream & the Cream Machine. I used to listen to that group back in the 1970’s & always enjoyed their gigs, along with those by the Yard Apes, at OTWH in my hometown of Lawrence, Kansas. I did not realize that those dudes were still alive, much less putting out some great songs! I appreciate you giving “Dr. Dream” both a shout out & a little love!

Thanks again Mike for all of your work in writing & posting your excellent ticket 2 ride blog. It is always an enjoyable read!
