In honor of seeing Mr. Jerry Seinfeld perform tonight at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, this Friday I’ll list five (or more) favorite Seinfeld show episodes. Watch for my upcoming blog on the Seinfeld episodes that couldn’t be made today.
Giddy-up!
The Puffy Shirt (Season 5, Episode 2) – Kramer’s low-talking date designs clothes. Jerry doesn’t hear her and mistakenly agrees to wear one of her puffy shirts on the Today Show. He’s upset when Kramer shows him the awful shirt. “I don’t want to be a pirate!” he says. He wears it anyway and feels humiliated. George meanwhile is discovered, his hands become sought after for ads.
The Outting (Season 4, Episode 17) – “Not that there’s anything wrong with that!” Jerry and George unwittingly pretend to be gay, and wind up being written about for a college newspaper, which is picked up by other newspapers, causing embarrassment for both. George visiting his mother in the hospital as the guy in the next bed over gets a sponge bath, is priceless.
The Sponge (Season 7, Episode 9) – Elaine’s go-to birth control choice is “the sponge.” Unfortunately, her brand is taken off the market so she hoards all that she can find and rations them for “sponge-worthy” encounters. George needs one for his encounter with Susan, but Elaine won’t give him one.
The Contest (Season 4, Episode 11) – The episode that never uses the term it’s all about. Who is the “master of their own domain?” The contest is about who can hold out the longest.
The Marine Biologist (Season 5, Episode 14) – George finally gets to act like a marine biologist when he must rescue a whale from distress. What he finds stuck in the whale’s blow-hole is a golf ball, and it happens to belong to Kramer. Elaine hosts a visiting writer and believes what Jerry told her about the War and Peace literary classic’s original name: War, What is it Good For? That of course is something he made up.
