Five television series I recommend, although two of the five have ended.

Best Medicine (Fox) – Enjoying the second season. An Americanized version of the Brit series Doc Martin. If you enjoyed Northern Exposure, you’ll like this quirky series. Josh Charles stars as Martin Best is a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint Maine fishing village, the fictional Port Wenn, where he spent summers as a child. Annie Potts plays his aunt. A great supporting cast of offbeat characters.

Grantchester (PBS) – After season 11 ended this year, the characters of the English village faded into history. A village priest assists the local police in solving crimes, while dealing with his personal and parish issues. The series spans the 1950s and 1960s.

Neagley (Prime) – A spinoff of Reacher, Neagley is a former military cop who is a P.I. in Chicago. If you enjoyed Reacher, this show should fulfill your need for violence and creepy stories. Although it lacks the dry humor of Reacher (which the books had none of), the first season is airing now. The series stars Maria Sten as Frances Neagley and Greyston Holt as Chicago Detective Hudson Riley.

Duster (MAX) – Unfortunately, Duster was one and done. Warner Bros. pulled the plug. A retro show taking place in the early 1970s, the storyline involved organized crime, an undercover FBI agent, the Southwest, a hot car, and a guy who has to go back and forth across the line between good and bad. Josh Holloway and Ernie Hudson headed a great cast. I miss this one.

Bad Monkey (Apple+) – Season one aired like two years ago and we’re waiting on the next season when series star Vince Vaughn has time to film the next one. Andrew Yancy is a former police detective who has been reduced to conducting restaurant inspections in a South Florida community. Expect Vaughn’s offbeat humor and unusual situations. Season two airs starting in December 2026.
