In a thriller, the reader is supposed to get more and more addicted to the story, forcing yourself to put it down. The tension and anticipation should build.

That’s not this book. I struggled to stay awake and not give up on it. In a word: boring.

I’ve read every Reacher book and In Too Deep is a dud. The main problem is the story, it’s not interesting. There are elements that beg to be harnessed, but overall, this a snooze. Too many characters, many of which are not interesting and just get in the way of a gripping, fast-moving story. The book is credited to Lee and Andrew Child. Whichever of them wrote the book didn’t do a very good job. I could stop the review right there, it’s average at best, and for the Jack Reacher franchise, that’s troubling.

The pacing of the book is like driving those switchbacks in the story, slow and monotonous. There’s too much detail where it doesn’t belong and too little detail on the significant story elements.

I’ve notice the past couple of Reacher books have not been up to the quality of the earlier books in the series. In Too Deep is the first Reacher novel that I’ve struggled to finish. I can only hope that the Child authors get back on track with the next one, or I might very well close the book on Jack Reacher. I am pained to write such a negative review.

However, the Amazon series is worth the time, season three is a solid watch.
