Summertime makes me think of berries. Since a trip to Maine recently, I’ve been drinking berry favored beers. Beer + Berries = Outstanding!
Berries also taste good in yogurt, ice cream, cereals, pancakes, smoothies, sodas, jams and other delights. Who knew!
Berries are a very healthy food. They’re rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
My five favorites:
Strawberry – My absolute favorite. Strawberries are good with so many summertime foods, drinks and treats. This is my go-to flavor. We’ve picked strawberries the past few years. Strawberry shortcake was always a treat as a kid.

Blackberry– A close second to strawberries. I have found that blackberry is a great flavor for drinks like tea and soda. Yogurt is another favorite. I’d like to try cobbler and pie. A dash of blackberry in ale, with a taste of citrus is enjoyable.

Blueberry – Evidently, beer is not the only use for blueberries. News to me! Actually, muffins, yogurt, pancakes, with vanilla ice cream and frozen drinks are my faves.
Blueberries can be added to other flavors for breads, deserts, drinks and salads.

Cranberry – I had to learn to like cranberries. In our fridge is a cranberry V8 drink. I’m particular about how I consume cranberries. Holiday time is when cranberries are consumed as side dishes or sauce. I was never big on cranberries at Thanksgiving, maybe because old people were always trying to get me to their jello salads. I’ve yet to indulge in scones or bread or pie made with cranberries.

Mulberry – Mulberry you say? Wild mulberries, we used to eat those as kids. We no doubt consumed whatever tiny worms that were inside. I’m not a huge fan of mulberries anymore, but it’s a childhood memory.

Botanically speaking, grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes and bananas are considered berries. Strange you say. I like all of those except for the nasty cucumber. They meet the broad definition of berries:
Single ovary – It grows from a single flower with one ovary. Fleshy inside – It has a fleshy structure without a stone or pit. Contains seeds – The seeds develop inside the fruit’s pulp.
There are other berries that I like but have less experience with: Boysenberry, Salmonberry, Dewberry, Tayberry, Huckleberry, Loganberry and Halle Berry (just kidding).
